communicate, dammit!
As a business owner, I have always struggled with how people communicate. Yes, you read that right. Let me explain…
I always try to go above and beyond with communication. I am always early for meetings. I always confirm the meeting a couple of days in advance. I like to communicate with others how I would expect to be communicated with. Maybe I am asking too much, but my goodness most people are awful at communication. And I feel like it has gotten much worse since the start of this year. I feel like every business owner is holding their breath, waiting for the next shoe to drop. I feel like every business owner is trying to see what happens with the economy. I feel like every business owner is hoping for the best, but anticipating for the worst.
I don’t know what will happen. I am not a fortune teller. But I am tired of people saying they “support local” but are nowhere to be found when it comes to actual support. There is more to supporting your local community than patting yourself on the back and having some kids come in and buss some tables and give them a percentage of sales on a weeknight when you are still making a profit and getting some free promo on top of it at your restaurant. Good for you! You are giving back! But stop acting like you are a gift to the community. Honestly, the ego of some business owners is superb. Perhaps you think that of me and this blog post! But at the end of the day, you can run your business any which way you choose. You can be humble or you can have an ego. You can give back quietly or pat yourself on the back.
I have dealt with this contradiction my entire life. I want to push Inherent Dream forward. I want to promote our projects. I want to help others promote their projects. But I do not want to be an “influencer” or pay for likes on our social media channels or sell myself out. I have told many friends and family members, if you ever see me on some TV channel sometime hawking some product or doing a gossip segment, please come and find me and slap me across the face.
Yeah, but Trevor, don't you want to be famous?
I want the projects of Inherent Dream to get exposure, without selling out at all costs.
Well, then you might not get very far.
Well, then so be it. We’ll grab our corner of the universe and be grateful for everyone who has joined us for the ride... But mainly those who actually give damn about communication and have a little bit of humility in them.
We have never had more forms of technology than we do today in order to communicate with each other. And yet, most are so bad at it. Why is that? - Trevor
